Life After Stroke: Experiences of Stroke Survivors and Carers in Kirklees and Calderdale

Healthwatch Kirklees and Calderdale (now called Veera) carried out engagement to understand people’s experiences of stroke care, rehabilitation, and life after stroke.

We heard from survivors, carers, family members, healthcare professionals, and community organisations. We did this through surveys, face-to-face conversations, focus groups, and direct feedback.

The findings suggest that while acute stroke care is working well, there is an opportunity to strengthen longer-term rehabilitation, improve follow-up and signposting, and ensure people affected by stroke receive the practical, emotional, and community support they need to rebuild their lives.

Check out the full report to see exactly what people said and what we recommended to local services to better care and support.

Victim Experience

We conduct independent surveys to understand how victims experience police services and support, helping organisations identify opportunities for improvement.

Currently, we are working on a Victim Voice survey on behalf of Wiltshire Police.

We use a range of research methods to gather comprehensive insights into victim satisfaction and experiences, such as:

  • In-depth telephone interviews
  • Quantitative surveys
  • Focus groups

Extra Care and Retirement Living

We are working with a national organisation specialising in extra care and retirement living to better understand the people who use its services. Our work includes analysing data, reviewing information and policies, and speaking directly with residents to explore whether services are accessible and inclusive for different communities.

West Yorkshire Vaccine Insight

We are working in partnership with VCSE organisations across West Yorkshire to understand people’s experiences and views of vaccinations. We are bringing together community insight to help services understand what encourages people to get vaccinated, what gets in the way and what could improve.

Upper Valley – Access to Services

We are listening to people in the Upper Valley to understand their experiences of accessing local services. This will help identify what is working well, where people face difficulties and where things could be improved. To tell us about your experiences of living in Todmorden and surrounding areas head to our ‘Share your experience’ page.

Community Champions

We work with Third Sector Leaders Community Champions across Kirklees to make sure local people’s experiences help shape health services and decisions. We analyse thousands of conversations gathered by Champions, identify common themes and inequalities and turn what communities are saying into useful insight for local organisations.

Integrated Neighbourhood Teams – Kirklees

We are supporting Integrated Neighbourhood Teams in Kirklees to understand what local people are experiencing. We bring together community feedback and insight to help teams understand the needs and priorities of the neighbourhoods they serve.

Integrated Neighbourhood Teams – Calderdale

We are working with Integrated Neighbourhood Teams in Calderdale to strengthen how local people’s experiences inform neighbourhood services. We are helping teams gather, understand and use community insight to support planning and improvement.
