Trans and Non-Binary People’s Experiences of GP Care in Kirklees and Calderdale

Healthwatch Kirklees and Healthwatch Calderdale worked with local trans and non-binary people to better understand their experiences of accessing GP services and primary care.

The project explored how people experience registration, appointments, communication, referrals and ongoing healthcare support. Participants shared both positive and negative experiences, highlighting the factors that help people feel respected, listened to and supported, as well as the barriers they can face when accessing care.

The findings provide valuable insight into the experiences of trans and non-binary communities and identify opportunities for GP practices and healthcare organisations to improve inclusivity, understanding and patient experience. The report also highlights examples of good practice and the changes people would like to see in the future.

This report brings together the voices of trans and non-binary people across Kirklees and Calderdale and offers recommendations to help ensure primary care services are welcoming, accessible and responsive to the needs of all patients.
